Great video. I do think Sorolla considered himself an impressionist though. I think I remembered reading that somewhere.

Sorolla did not consider himself an impressionist, he was much more influenced by Bastien LePage, as he stated. Hope that helps. Check the early Books, not contemporaries. Thanks.

WOW! So many Sorolla's I had never seen before! I love the painting with the girl in the Oleander's. The color and light in the shade is absolutely amazing. I have a big painting of his self-portrait (copy of course) in my studio. Sorolla will always be one of my favorites.

Another great video on one of the masters of painting. For me, Sorolla's "super powers" are his twin talents of draftsmanship and capturing values. Yes, of course he uses color masterfully, but to capture the feeling of light in his paintings-along with J. S. Sargent-an artist must understand the balance between light and dark. To capture the feeling of light in a painting, you must also understand the shadows or darks in contrast. or, to be more accurate, the balance between the darks and lights. That, IMHO, is where Sorolla excels. Then, with his expertise of drawing, his seemingly "dashed off" brush strokes echo the energy of the light. Focused myself on the medium of watercolor, I'd love to see a deeper dive into Sorolla's watercolor technique. This channel is one of the few I look forward to every time a new post appears. Thanks again.

Never miss one of your videos and shorts. Please continue. One detail: in the short videos at the bottom, I get confused by the text. It is not very clear who is the painter since there is also another name . Here I know Sorolla, but if I didn't I would wonder if it's Frits Thaulow who painted it (who is he?). Again, it's just a detail.

I learn't a lot doing the Bargue Plates when studying fundamentals. Its the fast track to gleaning the power of shadow shapes and edge variation. Its a lesson in "less is more", less means mystery as well as gaining more powerful compositions

Bellissimo! Grazie.

While Emil's still lifes were nicely done, Dines, his son, was truly a brilliant painter. I used to study Dines 'The Jade Bowl' at the Indianapolis Art Museum, of all places, and am still impressed by how clean his lines were, especially at the edges of the copper plate. He learned great technique from his father, but took it much further to a masterful level of understanding and rendering tonal images with something of a drybrush, or scumble effect to add texture to the surfaces, especially the backgrounds. He also understood how to round edges, as in cups, small containers, etc. without sacrificing proper perspective, as seen so often in modern still lifes. And the placement of simple elements in what feels like a natural composition, is consistent with his polished work. Well worth a trip if you haven't seen the original, or others at various museums in the US.
